Micro Rock Crawler Guide: Size, Space and Small Obstacles

Short answer: When choosing a micro rock crawler, check its actual dimensions and the space you can use. The FMS FCX24M Range Rover measures 227 × 103 × 120 mm. Its compact size is a useful starting point for planning a small route, but tyre size, clearance and the shape of each obstacle also matter.

This guide focuses on space and route planning for the yellow Range Rover. The measurements are FMS specifications. Suggestions for a first course are practical starting points, not claims that we have tested a particular layout.

Start with the dimensions, not just the word micro

A description such as micro does not replace a dimension table. For this 1:24 Range Rover, FMS gives a length of 227 mm, width of 103 mm and height of 120 mm. Its wheelbase is 134 mm, and its front and rear tyres measure 48 mm in diameter by 17 mm wide.

Mark out the vehicle's length and width on paper if that helps you picture it. Then allow additional room for approaching an obstacle, making corrections and turning away. We do not have a verified turning-radius figure, so there is no basis for promising that it will complete a turn in a specific gap.

What does 28 mm ground clearance tell you?

FMS lists a minimum ground clearance of 28 mm. That is useful when reading the specification, but it is not a universal pass/fail limit for obstacles. Do not buy or build a course on the assumption that every object below that height will be crossed successfully.

The manual also lists a 64° approach angle and 47° departure angle for the Range Rover. These are vehicle geometry figures, not a tested maximum climbing angle. Keep them separate from performance claims.

A simple first route

As a cautious starting point, choose a dry, level area at floor level. Leave an unobstructed section where you can practise steering, stopping and reversing before introducing a small obstacle. Use stable objects that will not unexpectedly roll or slide, and avoid sharp edges.

Build up difficulty gradually rather than starting with a steep or narrow route. Leave an easy way around each obstacle so you can change direction without forcing the vehicle. Stop and reposition it if you are unsure; completing a route is less important than keeping the model and its surroundings safe.

Keep the course away from stair edges and raised furniture. Do not assume the tyres or body will leave delicate surfaces unmarked. Select a suitable surface you can protect, and keep people and pets out of the driving area.

Can you use it in a UK garden?

Assess the conditions first. The official manual says to keep the model away from moisture and prohibits use in rain or snow. That rules out treating wet grass, puddles or muddy water as recommended environments.

If a suitable outdoor area is dry, keep the model in sight and follow the manual's operating precautions. Do not infer whole-vehicle waterproofing from a component specification or a promotional outdoor photograph.

Scale details and route planning

The Range Rover has an ABS hard body and a factory-installed roof rack. These are part of its scale appearance; they are not permission to use the bodywork as a handle or to accept repeated falls. Leave clearance around protruding details when planning a route.

FMS says the FCX24M uses solid front and rear axles without portal axles. There is no reason to plan around an imagined portal-axle clearance advantage. Use this model's stated dimensions instead of figures from another FCX vehicle.

Space checklist before you buy

• Can you store a model measuring 227 × 103 × 120 mm?
• Do you have a dry area with room to approach, steer and recover the vehicle?
• Can you keep obstacles low and stable, away from drop-offs?
• Is the intended user suitable for the manufacturer's 14+ model guidance?
• Can you follow the separate battery preparation and charging instructions?
